| What kind of Spanish do we speak in Buenos Aires? |
|
Castellano or Español Rioplatense is the name of the dialect used in the area around Rio de la Plata. It has several diferences compared to the Spanish spoken in other countries from latinamerica and also Spain. Here are some characteristics: |
| |
- Voseo: The second singular personal pronoun is "VOS". It replaces "Tú" and it has a special verbal form in the present tense and the imperative. For example: "Vos sos muy simpática.", "¿Podés ayudarme?", "¿Querés ir al cine?", "Vení rápido".
|
| |
- Phonetics: The most important diferences are: "Seseo" and "Yeísmo". Seseo is the characteristic by which we replace the sound of the Z for the sound of the S. For example: "zapato" is pronounced as /sapato/. Yeísmo is the use of the sound "ye" or "sh". For example: "lluvia" is pronounced /shuvia/.
|
| |
- Tenses: We prefer the use of the verbal phrase instead of the future. Example: "Voy a viajar." ("Viajaré."). In conversation we use the simple past instead of the compount past. Example: "¿Qué hiciste esta semana?" ("¿Qué has hecho esta semana?"
|
| |
- Vocabulary: Besides the contribution of Lunfardo, we have some differences in vocabulary related to food, clothes, and basic words. Examples:
